A veteran of the U.S. Army, Shelby Russell advocates for her clients with the same discipline and resolve that defined her military service. At Callison Tighe, her practice is focused on civil litigation, serious personal injury, and federal criminal defense.
Before earning her law degree from the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law, Shelby gained broad practical experience through multiple clerkships and fellowships. As a Law Fellow at Yale Law School’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic, she was part of a nationally recognized team that advocated for veterans and service members through large-scale class action litigation before federal agencies and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
Shelby further developed her legal experience through a two-year clerkship with the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, Special Prosecution Unit, where she assisted with the prosecution of cases involving domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking—experiences that shaped her thoughtful, client-centered approach to advocacy.
Shelby’s leadership and service have been recognized beyond the courtroom. In 2024, she was named one of Columbia Business Monthly’s Best & Brightest 35 and Under, honoring young professionals making meaningful contributions to their communities and professions.
Before law school, Shelby earned a Master of Science in criminal justice from Saint Leo University in Florida while working full time as a child protective investigator, later serving as a federal background investigator for high-level United States government security clearances.
Shelby’s career began in the U.S. Army, where she served honorably as a Combat Medic (68W). The discipline, resilience, and sense of purpose she developed in uniform continue to guide her approach to the law and her unwavering commitment to the clients she serves.
